Enter the extraordinary world of painter Christophe Drochon, who, for the first time, opens up his studio and allows us a privileged glimpse into his art. Frequently focusing on animals, his strikingly realistic yet dreamlike images reveal nature’s beauty and fragility, as well as Drochon’s profound concern over its destruction. As he creates, we watch the progression from initial sketches done outdoors Afrom life’ to painstaking studio work. Examples in a range of media showcase the different ways he captures a big cat’s baleful gaze, a macaw’s luminous plumage, and the ominous peace of a slumbering polar bear. Françoise Coffrant supplies illuminating, authoritative commentary.

Landscape

When artist Tom Curry first moved to Maine, his house overlooked a small, uninhabited island in Eggemoggin Reach. One day, while rowing across to the island, his boyhood fear of water came crashing in on him. So he decided to explore his fear head-on, and began painting the island “as a way to delve into my own darkness and seek a way back to the surface.” That series of paintings, capturing the island in all lights, weathers, and moods, forms the basis of this book. But the whole is much more than the sum of its parts. These paintings represent an ongoing narrative: “island as escape and entrapment, island as longing and memory, island as sanctuary, island as self in a sea of turmoil.” The paintings are accompanied by essays by Terry Tempest Williams, exploring Curry’s spirit of place, and Carl Little, establishing Curry’s art within the field of landscape painting.

This second edition of the definitive book on artist Wolf Kahn adds his achievements of the past 15 years. A new essay by Karen Wilkin highlights the development of his late style, and a generous selection of paintings and pastels showcases his bold, freewheeling new work. The main text, by Justin Spring, traces Khan’s art and life to 1993. An insightful essay by Louis Finkelstein illuminates the fusion of abstraction and representation in the work.

Kahn’s landscapes evoke a particular sense of place and season, yet they are also universal. His radiant hues, tangy color contrasts, and pervasive sense of light have placed him at the forefront of American representational artists.

Approaching the subject of pastoral landscapes with his typical verve, beloved instructor Terry Harrison guides beginning watercolor artists through five country scenes in this step-by-step guide. From a country estate beyond an open gate to a small church nestled among a bluebell wood, each scene is carefully selected to give new artists confidence and offer intermediate artists a handful of satisfying challenges. All projects are accompanied by pull-out tracing paper that easily transfers each scene onto watercolor paper—artists need only a soft graphite pencil and a rubbing tool to achieve the transfer—eliminating the need for prerequisite drawing abilities. Additional scenes include a snowy winter pasture and a small footbridge crossing a ford among autumn leaves.

Landscape

No genre has fascinated Gerhard Richter so consistently throughout his career as that of landscape. Ever since his softly overpainted Views of Corsica series of 1968-69, the artist has revisited and reprised its possibilities, creating black-and-white townscapes based on newspaper picture and amateur photographs, mountain and park scenes with heavy impasto, illusionistic seascapes in subtly gradated tones and paintings worked with abstract overpainting. Frequently these paintings interrupt or quietly sabotage the transcendent horizon of the Romantic landscape, but the image presented is not exactly ironized as in other paintings of Richter's. "I felt like painting something beautiful" was the artist's response, when asked about the preponderance of landscapes in his works around 1970. Fifteen years later, he further elaborated that "my landscapes are not only beautiful or nostalgic, with a Romantic or classical suggestion of lost Paradises, but above all 'untruthful'... by untruthful I mean the glorifying way we look at Nature--Nature, which in all its forms is against us, because it knows no meaning, no pity, no sympathy..." Richter's approaches to landscape are various indeed, yet uniquely and recognizably his. The first edition of Gerhard Richter: Landscapes was published in 1998; it quickly sold out, was reprinted in 2002 and rapidly went out of print again. This new edition is the first to expand on the 1998, and brings us up to date with Richter's enduring fondness for this subject.
Gerhard Richter was born in Dresden in 1932, and rose to prominence in the early 1960s as a member of the Capitalist Realism movement alongside Sigmar Polke and others. His first solo show was in 1964 at Galerie Schmela in Düsseldorf. Today he is ranked among the world's greatest painters.

Discover the benefits of completing a watercolor painting in 30 minutes or less

Spending hours or even days on a watercolor painting can lead to dull, muddy results. But a surefire way to keep your paintings loose and fresh is to work quickly! In this informative, 64-page book, accomplished artist Paul Talbot-Greaves proves that painting in watercolor doesn't have to be an all-day event. In fact, an impressive landscape scene can be created in just 30 minutes or less, which Paul demonstrates in 27 step-by-step lessons. To discourage readers from overworking their paintings, the author breaks down each lesson into short blocks of time, indicating how many minutes should be spent on each stage. In addition, he provides practical information on tone, color, pattern, light, and more, so readers can improve their skills and develop their "artist's eye."

What is landscape? How does it differ from "land?" Does landscape always imply something to be pictured, a scene? When and why did we begin to cherish images of nature? What is "nature?" Is it everything that isn't art, or artifact? By addressing these and many other questions, Landscape and Western Art explores the myriad ideas and images of the natural world in Western art since the Renaissance.

Implying that land is the raw material, and that art is created by turning land into landscape, which then becomes art, author Malcolm Andrews takes the reader on a thematic tour of the fascinating and challenging issues of landscape as art. The books broad sweep covers the full, rich spectrum of landscape art, including painting, gardening, panorama, poetry, photography, and art. Artistic issues are investigated in connection with Western cultural movements, and within a full international and historical context.

Clear explanations and beautiful illustrations convey to the reader the idea of landscape as an experience in which everyone is creatively involved. Landscape and Western Art provides an enlightening and comprehensive critical overview of landscape art.

Landscape

Painting with watercolors gives you endless opportunities to create the world you want. You choose whether to let the sun blaze or the rain pour, to move a maple tree here or make the trail wind over there, to subdue a hillside with quiet greens or make a forest glow with dazzling golds and reds. It's not only a matter of what to paint, but how to go about painting it.

This book examines, one at a time, the three major elements of landscape painting: water, sky and land. You will be encouraged to try numerous ways of painting each one. Then you can choose the methods that best express how the outdoors speaks to you.

Let this reliable collection of tips, techniques, ideas and lessons be your companion on a sure path to creative fulfillment and better watercolor landscapes.
